March–May: spring is ideal
Daytime temperatures are 22–26°C. The mornings are cool, the light is clear, and the wildflowers bloom in the valleys. Petra is crowded during this window—it is school-break season in Europe and the Middle East—but the crowds are manageable if you arrive early. The Siq does not yet feel like an oven.
September–November: autumn is also perfect
Daytime temperatures are 24–28°C. The summer heat is breaking. The light is still strong in the morning. October is often called the best single month because the weather has cooled but the site is less crowded than spring. November is also good, though you start to see the occasional cool morning and the light fades earlier in the day.
July–August: why to skip summer
Midday temperatures climb past 40°C (104°F). The Siq is a stone oven. The Treasury, which has no shade, becomes painful. Most visitors abandon the Monastery climb because it is too hot. If you must visit in summer, start at 6:00 a.m., spend 2–3 hours in the shade near the Visitor Centre, and leave by noon. Many tours are cancelled in summer because operators and guides refuse the heat.
December–February: winter is short and cool
Daytime temperatures are 15–18°C—pleasant for walking, but the site closes at 16:00 instead of 18:00. You have less light and less time. Occasional rain or snow is possible, though rare. The site is quiet. If you do not mind an early exit and you like solitude, winter is fine. But most visitors prefer the extra two hours of daylight in the shoulder seasons.
Best time of day: arrive early
The Siq light is best from 6:30–10:00 a.m., when the sun is low and hits the canyon walls from the east. By noon, the Siq is mostly in shadow and the Treasury glares. Arriving early also means you beat the cruise-ship crowds, which peak between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If your tour departs at 7:00 or 8:00 a.m., you will have the site almost to yourself for the first hour.
Is Petra ever quiet?
